Watch: Workers Remove Snow from Tioga Pass In Yosemite
Anyone trying to enter Yosemite from the east is going to need to find another way in. One of its hearladed landscapes, Tioga Pass, remains closed because of snowfall.
After years of limited precipitation and snowfall, Tioga Pass has been innundated in 2017, forcing road closures as crews work to remove snow from the roadway. Crews plowed more than four miles of Tioga Road last week, where snow levels have been between eight and 10 feet.
There is no estimated opening date, according to the National Park Service. In years with similar snowpack, the road has opened in late June or early July.
Named after Tioga Mine, the name comes from an Iroquois and Mohawk word meaning "where it forks." Tioga Road (Highway 120) is the eastern entry point to the park.
Westbound Highway 120 remains open, and Yosemite is accessible from Highways 140 and Highway 41.
Half Dome, El Capitan, and the Ansel Adams Gallery stand out as Yosemite's most popular attractions. Tioga Pass is the main artery leading to the park when arriving from the east.
