The Big Cover-up: A Shield For Exterior Windshields

Midwest and East Coast drivers are all too familiar with scraping snow or ice off their windshield before they can even start driving.

And out in all parts of the country, falling leaves can fill a windshield and create a sticky mess.

Don't despair, there's an answer. Enter the low-tech windshield cover

Here are some tips when choosing an exterior windshield cover (courtesty of cover manufacturers A1 Auto Safe and OxGord):

  • Water-resistance. Invest in a cover made of high-quality, water-resistant material for best results.
  • Find the right size for your vehicle. Exterior windshield covers come in different sizes for sedans and SUVs, make sure you get the right one for your vehicle or the fit won’t be right and moisture can accumulate beneath the cover.
  • Suction cups. Magnets can damage your paint job. Instead, opt for an exterior windshield cover that uses suction cups to adhere to the vehicle.
  • Collapsible. A windshield cover that can be neatly folded and stowed away takes up far less space in your trunk or backseat.
  • Make sure the interior lining won’t cause damage. A lining made of soft material won’t scratch, smudge or cause streaks.
  • Windproof straps are especially useful. Windproof straps that attach to the wheels hold a cover in place, preventing it from blowing off in extreme winds. Straps made of nylon are more durable, while elastic straps make for easy installation.
