The 10 Important Safety, Performance Reminders For Spring Driving

Drivers everywhere are pulling out their virtual maps, creating an excursion wish list and making plans for a long overdue escape.

Take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle is up to the challenge.

Winter weather has a way of creating issues that become expensive repairs. Road salts, potholes, the freezing-thawing cycle, extreme temperatures--they all contribute to problems in spring and summer.

1. Batteries: Winter weather takes a toll on batteries. Have your advisor check out the charge level.
2. Wiper blades: The wear and tear of winter months can leave you and your blades a bit frayed. Replace blades to prevent window streets and keep your vision clear all summer.
3. Tire exchange: Swap out those winter tires for all-season treads. Warm temperatures dramatically accelerate wear on the soft rubber compounds.
4. Tire replacement: If you haven’t checked tread depth recently, take a quick look and see if your tires are holding up. If not, we can fit your vehicle with the right tires for your driving plans.
5. Spare replacement: Your safety depends on a reliable spare tire. When was the last time you checked the spare tire? Take a peek if the answer is “never” or “I can’t remember.” Safety experts recommend replacing the tire if you see any cracks in the rubber.
6. Tire pressure: Tires lose air every month. If you haven’t checked air pressure since fall, drop by to have them inspected and re-inflated.
7. Chips and cracks: Did your windshield encounter an object such as pebbles or other road debris?
8. Drips and leaks: Things tend to get jarred loose over the rough winter months. Freezing and thawing cycles also can cause problems with seals and connectors. If you notice any leaks or drips, get them inspected right away.
9. Fluid reservoirs: You likely used your windshield washing fluid frequently this past winter. Top off the fluid and check the coolant reservoir as well.
10. Alignment: If you encountered potholes or curbs in the colder months, they could ruin your tires in the warmer months. An alignment inspection will help straighten out problems and extend the life of your tires.
