Scion iQ offers commuters economical, convenient travel
The Scion iQ, the newest arrival in high-mileage subcompact vehicles, packs an impressive list of features into a vehicle perfectly suited for commuters and local errands.
“Scion prides itself on being an innovative brand with a lineup of iconic vehicles that set automotive trends,” said Jack Hollis, vice president of Scion. “The iQ will define the premium micro-subcompact segment as the choice for new urbanites who want clever transportation without a sacrifice in style or new features.”
The latest Scion entry has enough space for three adults. It also gives drivers plenty of options for reconfiguring the interior to store everything from groceries to sports equipment.
Under the Hood
The iQ generates its thrifty acceleration from a 90 horsepower, 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine. The dual variable valve timing (VVT-i) powerplant is mated to a continuously variable transmission. Rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-II), the Scion iQ is expected to deliver a combined city/highway of more than 30 MPG.
The vehicle has a compact, 78.7 wheelbase for fitting in tight spaces and utilized MacPherson struts up front with a torsion beam on the rear. Overall length is 120.1 inches and width is 66.7 inches.
Comfort and Convenience
The Scion iQ can transport three adults and one child in what Scion refers to as its “3+1” seating. The offset front seats allow an adult passenger behind the front-seat passenger and a child to sit behind the driver.
The front seats are Scion’s new slim-profile design, allowing more legroom for rear-seat passengers. The rear seats are built with a 50/50 split, and both can fold down for cargo space large enough to haul two golf bags.
A six-speaker audio system is standard in all iQ models and is available with multiple head options. The electronics equipment also comes with USB plugs and auxiliary ports to accommodate audio devices. Steering-wheel-mounted controls allow the driver to control them without letting go of the wheel.
Safety
All Scion iQ models come standard with 10 airbags. In addition to driver passenger airbags, knee airbags and curtain airbags, the iQ has a rear-window curtain airbag.
The iQ also boasts traction control, vehicle stability control, electronic brake force distribution on antilock brakes and brake assist.
