Quick fix for bringing back the new-car shine
Months of driving winter roads have left your vehicle looking faded and desperately in need of a cleaning. How can you avoid spending the entire afternoon washing and waxing while bringing back that new-car shine?
The latest “all-in-one” wash and wax solutions can help protect your vehicle while you wash.
“Washing and waxing are two separate activities,” said Mike Pennington of Meguiar’s. “Washing removes loose contaminants. Waxing is like sunscreen and is always the best protection for your vehicle.”
Pennington suggested applying a liquid or paste wax three to four times a year for maximum protection. When you don’t have time for applying wax, Pennington said you can still protect your investment with a wash and wax solution.
“Coming out of winter is a mandatory time to remove the stuff Mother Nature threw at you,” Pennington said.
All-in-one products first entered the market about 50 years ago. They combine car soap with wax in the same container and are designed to replace your regular carwash product. Like a shampoo and conditioner product for hair, these products save time and offer some protection.
“All-in-one wash and wax products have evolved from not having time to apply liquid or paste wax,” said Pennington.
All-in-one products do not replace hand waxing, Pennington said. Instead, they extend and enhance the wax protection that already exists. Adding a small layer of wax prevents the wax already on the vehicle from reducing as quickly as it would if a straight car wash was used.
Each time you wash your vehicle, you’ll provide ongoing protection. If you wax regularly, you’ll extend that protection. If not, your vehicle will still benefit.
“You are leaving behind some form of protection and enhancing the wax protection that is already on there,” said Pennington.
Pennington offered the following tips when using an all-in-one wash and wax product:
- Choose a ph-balanced, non-detergent car wash and wax solution for best results. Harsher detergents, including dish soap, can strip wax already on the vehicle.
- Treat the product like a regular car wash product. Use as often as your vehicle needs washing.
- Work on a surface that is cool to the touch. Avoid working in direct sunlight to keep the product from adhering to your vehicle’s paint.
- Use the two bucket method to prevent putting debris back on the vehicle. One for plain water to rinse the wash mitt. One for the solution.
- Use a clean microfiber wash mitt for washing to prevent scratches and a clean, dry microfiber towel to prevent water spots.
