Drivers Beware: Most of California Under Heat Advisory This Week
Most of California is under a heat advisory through at least Thursday, and residents are urged to take precautions before heading into the sun.
The National Weather Service advises everyone—particularly children and the elderly—exercise caution when going outdoors. Drivers can also expect to spend gridlock in searing temperatures.
“Outdoor exposure increases chances for heat related illness, especially for sensitive groups and people without access to air-conditions,” the National Weather Service reported.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests everyone should take these steps to prevent heat-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths during hot weather:
- Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as possible.
- Drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
- Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.
- Never leave children or pets in cars.
- Schedule outdoor activities carefully.
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
- Pace yourself.
- Check the local news for health and safety updates.
It’s possible your car might overheat during a time like this.
Here's what to remember:
- Turn off the engine and open the hood.
- Never twist the radiator cap while it is hot. Not only is the cap itself blistering hot, it’s holding back a rolling boil of chemicals under high pressure. Opening the cap of a hot radiator may cause severe injury from scalding liquid. Wait for the radiator to cool before opening.
- Continuing to drive an overheating engine can cause severe damage. Consider a tow to a local service center or repair shop.
