How to Turn Your Vehicle Into WIFI Fun Zone for Family
Cars symbolize freedom and possibilities. Same goes for the Internet.
Pair them up and enjoy conveniences straight out of science-fiction.
“Wi-Fi in vehicles allows us to make better use of our time,” said Scott Caswell, senior marketing director for Kenwood. “It helps with directions, streams music, enables us to make a dinner reservation while on the way and lets passengers get the most out of their tablets.”
There are a number of ways to connect your car to the Internet. Newer models include a year or two of Internet access, others provide Wi-Fi access as an option.
Drivers of older vehicles aren't left out of the fun. Purchasing a hot spot for a car requires no installation with monthly data charges added by your cell phone provider.
Manufacturers recently unveiled WiFi-connected audio and video system for vehicle dashboards. The devices feature LED screens with real-time navigation, maintenance reminders and the ability to stream music. Some even support voice-activated commands so drivers can access text messages and emails without taking their eyes off the road.
Caswell offers the following advice for drivers thinking about WiFi in the vehicle:
- Think about how you’ll use the data. Wi-Fi is great for entertaining members of your carpool, getting directions or turning your vehicle into a remote office.
- Consider the features you’ll want or need before buying. Are you using the Internet to stream music? Get directions? Allow your passengers to play games online?
- Avoid distractions. Don’t get a system that impedes your view or draws your attention from the road. Certain systems play video but only when the parking brake is in use.
- Decide if you want vehicle integration. Some Wi-Fi systems sync up with a vehicle’s diagnostic system to offer service reminders, maintenance warnings and more.
