Highlander brings car-like experience with SUV-style
Toyota’s 2012 Highlander is a crossover that gives drivers the choice of V6, four-cylinder and hybrid models.
Now in its second generation, the Highlander is designed for car-like performance with SUV-style ride and feel.
Under the Hood
Toyota engineers gave the newest highlander an engine for every appetite. The 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine puts out 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 25 mpg on the highway. It has variable valve timing to optimize efficiency and is mated exclusively to a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.
The upgraded 3.5-liter V6 delivers 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It, too, has dual variable valve timing for efficiency and is teamed with a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with selectable manual sequential shifting.
Hybrid models have a new 3.5-liter V6 engine that replaces last year’s 3.3-liter V6. Partnered with the electric motor, the powerplant delivers 280 net horsepower. The hybrid model gives drivers an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and highway.
The four-wheel independent suspension uses MacPherson struts up front and a dual-link strut setup for the rear wheels.
Up to 5,000 pounds can be towed with the optional tow package on V6 models. The four-cylinder tow package enables the vehicle to tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Comfort and Convenience
Drivers can tune their seats to their comfort level with the eight-way-adjustable power controls, and a 10-way adjustable seat on Limited models.
Cruise control, keyless entry, automatic up/down driver’s window, a UV-reduction windshield and rear privacy glass are all standard equipment.
A rear-view camera is available, which interfaces with a 3.5-inch multi-informational display that also shows fuel economy, average speed and a trip timer.
The optional navigation system works with an 8-inch screen, can be voice-controlled and has a touch-screen.
Toyota’s Tech Audio system is standard on some models and available on others and features USB connectivity, integrated XM Satellite Radio and hands-free phone integration and music streaming via Bluetooth technology.
The 2012 Highlander provides seating for up to seven or more than 95 cubic feet of cargo space.
Safety
Toyota engineers gave the Highlander four-wheel disc brakes with antilock braking system and electronic brake force distribution.
Also included on the 2012 Highlander is vehicle stability control, traction control and electronic power steering.
The vehicle dynamics integrated management system is designed to enhance handling and safety features such as the braking system to react to driving conditions and prevent skids, slides or wheel spin.
Continuously running four-wheel drive is optional, and the system gives drivers better traction and control in adverse road conditions.
Seven airbags are standard on the Highlander. They include driver and passenger front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, a driver’s knee airbag and roll-sensing curtain airbags.
