Explore your options when bringing bikes along for the ride
Sports enthusiasts who are dusting off bikes and pulling out camping gear struggle with the same considerations they tackled in winter. Namely, how can they transport expensive sports equipment without damaging it during the journey? “There are lots of options when it comes to transporting bikes and gear,” said John Bauer, founder of Rack N’ Road stores. “We always ask drivers if they intend to transport their gear on a long or short trip.”Why?“Drivers may want something that offers the most convenience,” Bauer said. “They may want easy access to the bike. They also may not be interested in removing the front wheel every time they place the bike on the rack.”Rear-mounted hitches are suited to short-haul trips. Drivers can access equipment quickly and easily. Some hitches offer a tray stand for wheels, providing stability even on short drives. According to Bauer, hitch racks work equally well for traditional “quick-release” bikes or “through axel” varieties. Hitch racks have a secondary benefit as well—they may be converted to haul campers or a jet ski trailer. For long hauls, Bauer said drivers should consider stability and security.“You don’t want your bike swaying at freeway speeds,” Bauer said, explaining that roof racks offer an aerodynamic alternative to hitch systems and incorporate a stabilizer bar that sets the bike firmly in place. Style preferences play a role, too. “Small cars just look better with a fork-mounted system rather than having both wheels attached to the rack,” Bauer said. “It gives them a rakish appearance.”Most racks include some sort of locking mechanisms. Cables and locks offer a deterrent but are not intended as iron-clad security. “Don’t leave equipment unattended overnight,” Bauer explained. “Even a heavy cable lock can be cut.”Bauer had the following suggestions for selecting racks for spring and summer sports enthusiasts:
- Vehicle racks used for winter gear can also be used in hauling spring and summer equipment. Investigate options before re-investing in a new rack system.
- Look for convenience on short-haul journeys. Hitch-mounted racks provide easy access and can fit up to five bikes.
- Consider stability and security for extensive drives. Roof-mounted racks offer good aerodynamics and prevent bikes from jostling over roadways.
- Give your vehicle a sporty appearance by using fork-mounted roof racks. While they provide excellent stability, fork-mounted racks require removal of the front wheel.
- Ask about security and never leave equipment unattended on your vehicle overnight. Most rack systems include some sort of security and drivers can add additional measures such as locking cables. Remember, rack security systems are a deterrent and not a prevention.
- Drive cautiously whenever using roof-mounted racks. Consider vehicle height when traveling through tight quarters.
“I’ve known people who have driven into their garage and forgot about bikes mounted to the vehicle roof,” Bauer explained. “There was a lot of damage to house and bike.”
