Dog As Copilot: Accessories For Safe, Fun travels

Pets have become as well-traveled as their owners for a growing number of drivers and that has spawned an industry devoted to keeping both of them safe on the road.

The American Pet Products Association has estimated nine out of 10 dog owners travel with their fury pals. An estimated 34 percent of dog owners took their pets on three or road trips in a year.

How can you help increase pet safety and reduce stress from driveway to destination? Here are some pet safety tips for upcoming travels:

1. Dog safety harness

A harness secures your pet to the seat belt system during sudden stops and sharp turns. Make sure the adjustable straps fit properly without restricting movement so your pet is comfortable during long drives.

Pet travel tip: Choose a harness designed for both car rides and outdoor adventures. Ensure the dog accessory also includes a back clip for walks and trail hikes.

2. Seat covers and cargo liners

Fur, mud and scratches inside your car are unavoidable when traveling with your dog. Use seat covers with side flaps that tuck into seat crevices to protect your upholstery from dog hair.

Consider cargo liners with a dirt-resistant cover for easy cleanup and cushioned side that let’s your pet lounge comfortably on long voyages.

3. Rubber floor mats

Muddy paws and dirty shoes come with the territory after playtime in the park or several hours on a hiking trail.

Nothing protects carpeted floors better than with rubber floor mats. Look for ones designed specifically for your make and model of vehicle. Deep-grooved rubber mats trap water and debris. A non-slip backing ensures they stay in place as your dog moves around in the vehicle.

4. Collapsible travel bowls

These bowls come in handy for feeding and hydrating your dog on the go. They are easy to clean and portable during car rides or picnic stops.

Pet travel tip: Freeze a portion of water in the bowl at night before a long trip. This ice pack slowly melts and provides chilled water for your dog on the road.

5. Pet barrier

A cargo divider keeps bigger dogs safely in the back and reduces distractions while driving. It also creates a defined space where your dog can relax and snuggle during the trip.

Some barriers double as organizers and allow you to attach storage pockets for leashes, pet toys and travel bowls.

6. Doggie dumpster

Concerned about pet potty stops on the road? A doggie dumpster offers a clean and sanitary way to manage your dog’s bathroom breaks.

Use leak-proof lid dumpsters with odor-resistant lining that trap the unpleasant smell and allow you dispose hygienically.

7. Portable water dispenser

A water dispenser helps your dog stay hydrated during long drives and lets you serve water quickly and easily.

Pet travel tip: Spill‑resistant flip‑top water bottles release water only when your dog drinks.

8. Waterless pet spray wash

Keep your pet clean without drenching them in the river. Waterless pet wash removes dirt or odors and leaves your dog smelling fresh after spending time outdoors.

Look for sprays with natural non-toxic ingredients. Keep a microfiber towel handy to wipe away any excess.

9. GPS tracker

For adventurous trips, a GPS tracker lets you monitor your dog’s location in real time, so you always know exactly where your pet roams.

Opt for a tracker with long battery life and geofencing alerts. This gives you peace of mind and lets you know when your dog strays outside a safe boundary.

10. Pet first-aid kit

Having a first-aid kit allows you to quickly treat your dog’s minor injuries, paw irritations and insect bites during outdoor adventures.

Include supplies like bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers and medications that your dog may need. Always keep the kit within easy reach in your vehicle.

11. Calming toys

Long trips and new surroundings can make dogs anxious. Soft plush toys help them stay relaxed and entertained.

Chew toys help relieve nervous energy, snuffle mats encourage sniffing and focused play, while mildly lavender scented toys keep them calm.
